Which is better for internships, Boston University or Syracuse University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is city access versus a more self-contained college network. Boston University gives you day-to-day access to one of the country’s strongest internship markets while school is in session, because it sits right in Boston and students can realistically intern during the semester in finance, biotech, healthcare, media, government, and nonprofits. Syracuse University has solid internship support and a loyal alumni base, but many opportunities are more dependent on summer placements, school-facilitated programs, or travel beyond the immediate area.

For internships specifically, BU usually has the edge. Its location matters a lot: being in Boston means students can commute to internships without leaving campus life behind, and that makes part-time semester internships much easier to build into your schedule. BU also benefits from proximity to major hospitals, startups, consulting firms, research labs, and corporate offices, which expands options across many majors.

Syracuse is definitely not weak here, especially in communications, media, public affairs, and some business fields. Newhouse, for example, has strong industry ties, and Syracuse’s alumni network is known for being engaged. The difference is that the surrounding local market is smaller, so students often rely more on summer internships in New York City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, or other hubs rather than nearby in-semester roles.

If your priority is easy, frequent access to internships while enrolled, BU is the more advantageous setup. If you are looking at a field where Syracuse has especially deep connections, especially Newhouse-related paths, it can still compete well. But across majors and for sheer internship convenience during the academic year, Boston University comes out ahead.
