Should I choose Drexel or Penn State for pre-med?

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure and access versus scale and traditional campus life. Drexel gives you direct proximity to major hospitals and a built-in urban health environment in Philadelphia, while Penn State offers the resources and breadth of a large flagship with a more classic college experience in State College. For pre-med, that usually comes down to where you think you will earn stronger grades, build close faculty relationships, and find clinical exposure without burning out.

Drexel has a real advantage in location. Being in Philadelphia can make shadowing, hospital volunteering, research, and exposure to different patient populations easier to pursue during the school year. Drexel students also benefit from the school’s strong health-professions orientation and connections to medical settings, which can make the pre-med path feel very visible and accessible.

Penn State’s advantage is scale and stability. It has extensive science offerings, lots of student organizations, major research activity, and a very established pre-health advising ecosystem. The large-campus environment can be excellent for pre-med students who want many options, but it also means you may need to be more proactive about standing out, finding mentorship, and navigating large introductory courses.

One thing I would weigh heavily is cost. Medical school is expensive, so minimizing undergraduate debt matters a lot. I would also think seriously about grading environment, advising quality, and where you are more likely to thrive personally, because GPA and sustained involvement matter more for med school than the school name alone.

If the costs are similar, I’d lean Drexel for pre-med because the Philadelphia setting gives you more immediate clinical access and a day-to-day environment that aligns closely with healthcare careers. If Penn State is meaningfully cheaper or feels like the place where you would be happier and perform better academically, that can easily outweigh Drexel’s location advantage.
