Princeton vs MIT: which has better value for an undergraduate degree?

I’m trying to decide between Princeton and MIT, and I keep hearing people say one or the other is a better “value” for undergrad. I mean value in the sense of what you get out of the degree compared with the cost and overall payoff after graduation.

I’m not really asking which school is better overall, just which one tends to be the stronger value for a student choosing between them.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus intensity: Princeton tends to offer a more traditional residential liberal arts experience with very strong funding and advising for undergraduates, while MIT delivers a more specialized, hands-on STEM environment with unusually direct access to labs, makerspaces, and industry-facing projects. MIT is exceptional at turning undergraduate energy into concrete experience through UROP research, hack/build culture, startup exposure, and recruiting pipelines that are deeply embedded in technical industries. If you want a place where undergrads are constantly making, testing, coding, and joining ambitious technical projects, MIT can produce enormous payoff very quickly.

On career outcomes, both open elite doors. The more meaningful difference is that MIT’s advantages are often more immediate and visible in technical fields, while Princeton’s value can be broader and longer-arc across academia, finance, policy, law, medicine, and many nontechnical paths.

If the student is specifically STEM-driven and wants the most immersive technical launchpad possible, MIT often becomes the better value in practice.
