Is NYU or Tufts better for political science?

Tufts has the edge for political science. It has a particularly strong reputation in international relations and public affairs, its location near Boston gives students access to government, policy, and nonprofit internships, and the undergraduate culture is often described as more cohesive and discussion-oriented than NYU’s.

One real differentiator is academic focus. At Tufts, political science sits in a campus environment where international affairs, civic engagement, and policy are unusually central to student life. That matters if you want classmates who are deeply engaged in politics beyond just the classroom, and it often translates into active debate, student publications, and easier access to faculty in a more traditional residential setting.

At NYU, the biggest advantage is New York itself. If your version of studying politics is tied to media, advocacy groups, campaigns, city government, or issue-based organizing, NYU offers exceptional proximity to those opportunities during the semester. The tradeoff is that NYU can feel more decentralized, and the student experience is often less centered on a single campus political culture than at Tufts.

Another difference is the flavor of the program. Tufts is especially appealing for students interested in U.S. government, political theory, comparative politics, and international politics within a liberal arts style environment. NYU is very strong too, but many students are drawn there because they want a larger urban research university experience with more independent navigation of internships, networking, and city-based opportunities.
