USC or Berkeley for computer engineering: which is the better choice?
I'm a high school senior trying to decide between USC and Berkeley for computer engineering, and I keep seeing people say both are great but for different reasons.

Berkeley has the edge for computer engineering overall. Its electrical engineering and computer sciences ecosystem is one of the deepest in the country, and that shows up in the breadth of upper-division technical coursework, the scale of faculty research, and the sheer number of peers pushing hard in systems, hardware, embedded computing, AI, and chip-adjacent work. Berkeley’s location in the Bay Area gives it especially strong access to semiconductor, systems, infrastructure, and startup opportunities, plus abundant research ties and recruiting visibility. USC also has excellent access to tech and strong employer connections through Los Angeles and Southern California, but Berkeley’s proximity to Silicon Valley is unusually valuable for computer engineering in particular.
USC’s best argument is the undergraduate experience. Smaller classes in some settings, more individualized support, and a campus culture that can feel more polished and less cutthroat make USC very appealing. If you know you thrive with more structure, easier access to advising, and a somewhat more curated student experience, that is a real point in USC’s favor, even though it does not outweigh Berkeley’s advantage in the field itself.
Cost can also be decisive. If Berkeley is dramatically cheaper, that strengthens the case even more. If USC gave you major merit aid or a much lower net price, that can absolutely justify choosing USC, because USC is still an excellent place to study computer engineering and can open the same broad categories of opportunities.
