Which is better for internships: UC Davis or San Diego State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus university brand and research ecosystem. San Diego State has a real advantage for internships during the school year because it sits in a major metro area with tourism, business, media, public health, engineering, defense, and nonprofit employers nearby. UC Davis, on the other hand, benefits from being part of the UC system, having strong faculty research, and offering access to Sacramento, the Bay Area, and state government connections, but many opportunities take more planning or commuting.

For part-time internships while classes are in session, SDSU is often the easier place to turn opportunity into something regular and practical. Being in San Diego makes networking, semester internships, and employer events more convenient, especially in business, communications, marketing, hospitality, public health, and some engineering-related fields. That kind of location advantage matters a lot because students can build experience earlier and more consistently.

UC Davis can be very strong too, especially in fields tied to research, biotech, agriculture, environmental science, veterinary and health-related work, and policy. The campus has a deeper research profile than SDSU, and that can translate into lab roles, faculty-led projects, and internships connected to Sacramento agencies or Northern California employers. For some students, those research and UC-network opportunities carry more long-term value than sheer local convenience.

Major matters a lot here. If you want frequent access to local employers and easier semester internships, SDSU has the edge. If your field benefits from research, graduate-school-style mentorship, or UC-linked opportunities, Davis can be just as strong or stronger, even if the path is less immediate.

So for internships alone, I’d give San Diego State the advantage for most students because location creates more day-to-day access to employers. I’d lean toward UC Davis instead if your intended major is one of the areas where its research strength and Northern California connections matter more than local convenience.
