Lower debt matters a lot after graduation because it gives you more freedom with first jobs, grad school, and where you can afford to live. NYU’s case is strongest when the school’s location is directly tied to your goals. If you want fields like finance, media, entertainment, fashion, arts, certain parts of tech, or policy-adjacent work, being in New York can create access that is unusually immediate and practical during college. The payoff is less about the classroom being dramatically better than UNC and more about the internships, part-time work, and professional exposure you can stack while enrolled.

A lot depends on your actual net price, not just published cost. If NYU gives enough aid to bring the gap much closer, the comparison changes a lot. But if the choice is UNC at a substantially lower cost versus NYU at full or near-full price, UNC is the better value for money for most undergrads.
