Is UNC or Ohio State a better value for an out-of-state student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UNC usually carries more national prestige and a somewhat tighter alumni brand, while Ohio State is often more flexible on cost through scholarships, honors options, and the sheer scale of opportunities on campus. For an out-of-state student, value often comes down to whether UNC’s added name recognition in certain fields is worth paying noticeably more over four years. Ohio State also has an enormous alumni network and very strong recruiting pipelines, so the gap in outcomes is often smaller than people expect.

UNC tends to stand out more in areas like business, public policy, journalism, and some pre-health tracks, and its reputation travels especially well across the East Coast. It also has the feel of a flagship that punches above its size nationally. If you know you want one of the programs UNC is especially known for, that can justify a higher price.

Ohio State’s value case is strongest when cost is meaningfully lower. It has major national reach, a huge alumni base, strong school spirit, and broad recruiting across business, engineering, data-related fields, and health professions. Because it is so large, students can access a lot of research, internships, and alumni connections, but they may need to be more proactive to take full advantage of them.

For pure cost-to-benefit, Ohio State is often the smarter out-of-state buy unless UNC comes in surprisingly close in net price or you are targeting a UNC standout program. Paying a modest premium for UNC can make sense. Paying a very large premium usually does not, because both schools can open plenty of doors and the difference in long-term outcomes is rarely big enough on its own to justify major extra debt.
