Is the University of Wisconsin or UC Berkeley harder to get into?

UC Berkeley is harder to get into than the University of Wisconsin-Madison in overall admissions difficulty. Berkeley is one of the most selective public universities in the country, and its applicant pool is both enormous and very academically strong. Wisconsin-Madison is also a respected flagship with plenty of competitive programs, but at the university-wide level it is notably less selective than Berkeley.

For a student building a college list, Berkeley usually belongs in the more reach-level category for many strong applicants, especially for out-of-state students and for impacted majors. Wisconsin fits more often as a match or possible reach depending on residency, major, and academic profile, but it does not operate at the same level of admissions stringency as Berkeley overall.

Part of the difference is the kind of applicant each school attracts. Berkeley draws a very high concentration of students with top grades, rigorous coursework, and standout extracurricular records from across California, the U.S., and internationally. Wisconsin attracts many excellent students too, but the overall admissions bar across the full university is less compressed at the very top.

Program choice matters at both schools. Berkeley can become especially difficult for areas like engineering, computer science, or business-related paths, while Wisconsin also has more competitive direct-entry or specialized options within an otherwise more accessible university. So the simplest comparison is this: both are strong public universities, but Berkeley is the tougher admit in a clear overall sense.
