Cornell vs UC San Diego for STEM: which is better for undergrad research and career opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between Cornell and UC San Diego for a STEM major, and both seem strong in different ways.

I’m mostly thinking about the undergrad experience, especially access to research, internships, and how the degree is viewed for jobs or grad school.

Both can open excellent STEM paths, but they serve somewhat different students. Cornell tends to be the better pick for someone who wants a more traditional residential campus experience, broad name recognition across industries, and a lot of structured academic intensity in one place. For grad school, both are taken very seriously. What matters more will be your grades, research output, recommendations, and relationships with faculty. My practical read is that Cornell often feels stronger for the student who wants a highly immersive campus identity and a nationally portable brand, while UC San Diego shines for the student who wants to plug into an active research and industry corridor from day one.
