MIT vs Penn for undergraduate research: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between MIT and Penn and research is a big part of what I care about in college. I want to be somewhere where undergrads can get involved in meaningful projects early and have good access to professors and labs.

I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m not sure how they compare specifically for research opportunities for undergraduates.

The biggest practical tradeoff is research culture versus research access across a broader university ecosystem. MIT is built around hands-on STEM research at the undergraduate level, and it is unusually normal there for students to join labs early, work closely with faculty, and treat research as part of everyday campus life. Penn also offers serious undergraduate research, but the experience can feel more distributed across its schools and centers rather than being the dominant identity of the whole campus.

For undergraduate research specifically, MIT has an edge. Its UROP program is one of the clearest reasons: it is a long-established, highly visible system that makes it straightforward for undergrads to find research in labs across science, engineering, and related fields, often starting in the first year. At MIT, faculty and graduate research are central to the institution, so undergrads benefit from a culture where lab involvement is expected rather than exceptional.

Penn is still very strong, especially if your interests cross disciplines. Because Penn combines strong arts and sciences, engineering, medicine, business, and policy in one place, it can be excellent for students interested in areas like bioengineering, computational biology, health research, neuroscience, public health, or tech plus entrepreneurship. There are plenty of research opportunities, but compared with MIT, you may need to be a bit more intentional about navigating departments, centers, and individual professors to find the right fit.

Professor access is good at both schools, but in different ways. MIT’s smaller, intensely technical environment often makes research conversations feel more direct and integrated into coursework. Penn’s scale gives you more variety, especially with access to resources connected to Penn Medicine and other professional schools, though that can also make the landscape feel less centralized.

If your main question is simply which place is better for undergraduate research, especially in science, engineering, math, or computing, MIT is the stronger answer. Penn becomes more compelling when you want substantial research plus the flexibility to connect it with medicine, business, policy, or other fields in a larger university setting.
