Is MIT or Columbia better for physics?

I’m a high school student interested in majoring in physics and I keep seeing both MIT and Columbia come up as strong options. I know they’re both prestigious, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered better for an undergraduate physics education and why.

I’m especially curious about how they compare in terms of academic strength and opportunities for physics majors.

For undergraduate physics, MIT is more often the place students point to first. Its physics department is exceptionally central to the school’s identity, the curriculum is deeply embedded in a science-and-engineering culture, and undergrads usually find it easier to be surrounded by peers who are intensely focused on technical work. If you already know you want a very physics-heavy college experience, MIT tends to offer the stronger overall environment.

Columbia is especially appealing if you want strong physics without giving up a core liberal arts structure. The Core Curriculum shapes the undergraduate experience in a way many students love, and some physics majors value that they are pushed to engage deeply with literature, philosophy, and writing alongside technical study. That can be a real plus for students interested in theory plus broader intellectual life, science communication, finance, law, or interdisciplinary work.

In terms of pure undergraduate physics intensity, MIT has the edge. In terms of combining elite physics with a classic Ivy-style education and New York access, Columbia has a distinct appeal.
