Indiana vs Penn State for accounting: which is better for a career in accounting?
I’m trying to decide between Indiana and Penn State, and accounting is the major I’m most interested in. Both seem like strong business schools, but I’m not sure which one would give me better preparation for an accounting career.
I’m mostly thinking about things like recruiting, internship opportunities, and how well the program is respected by employers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Indiana tends to offer a more nationally visible accounting pipeline through Kelley, while Penn State offers a very solid path with especially strong reach in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. For accounting specifically, Indiana is more often the school people point to first because Kelley has a long-established reputation with major accounting firms and a deep on-campus recruiting culture. Penn State is absolutely respected by employers too, but Indiana usually has the edge if your question is purely about accounting career pull.
For recruiting, Indiana benefits from Kelley being one of the most recognized undergraduate business schools in the country. That matters in accounting because the Big Four and other large firms recruit heavily from schools where they know the curriculum, student prep, and volume of candidates. Kelley also tends to have strong career services infrastructure and a large alumni network in business roles, which can help with both internships and full-time placement.
Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is also well regarded, and it places students into accounting jobs consistently. It can be especially useful if you want to work in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, or nearby markets where the Penn State network is very active. Employers know Smeal, and you would still have access to major firm recruiting, but the overall accounting brand advantage is usually stronger at Indiana.
In terms of preparation, both schools should give you the coursework needed for public accounting and CPA-track planning, but Indiana has a slightly stronger reputation for funneling students into top accounting opportunities right from undergrad. If cost is similar and you are choosing mainly based on accounting outcomes, I would lean Indiana.
