That breadth tends to intensify competition because many applicants see it as a top choice across very different interests.

Wellesley is also exceptionally selective, but its applicant pool is narrower by design. As a women’s college with a smaller undergraduate population and a more specific liberal arts identity, it appeals to a more self-selecting group of students. That does not make it easy by any means, but it does mean the admissions dynamic is a bit less broad-based than Northwestern’s.

Another useful distinction is national perception. Northwestern is more often grouped with the handful of private universities where admission is especially tough across the board, while Wellesley is usually discussed among the most selective liberal arts colleges. Both are reaches for most applicants, but Northwestern has the edge.
