Which is better for undergraduate research opportunities, MIT or Berkeley?
I'm trying to decide between MIT and Berkeley and one of my biggest priorities is getting involved in research as an undergrad. I want a place where it is realistic to find projects, build relationships with professors, and actually contribute to labs early on.
I know both schools are strong academically, but I'm mostly trying to understand which one tends to give undergrads more access to research opportunities in practice.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access: Berkeley offers an enormous range of labs and research areas, while MIT usually makes it easier for undergrads to get into research earlier and build closer working relationships with faculty. MIT’s undergraduate-focused research culture is unusually visible, and programs like UROP make research feel built into campus life rather than something you have to decode on your own. Berkeley absolutely has world-class opportunities, but the size of the university and the number of students competing for attention can make the path less straightforward in practice.
