Is UCLA or UC Santa Barbara better for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I want to end up in finance after college. I know both are strong UC options, but I’m not sure which one would give me a better path for recruiting, internships, and building the right network.
I’m looking for a straightforward comparison of how each school stacks up for finance specifically.

The biggest practical tradeoff is reach versus environment: UCLA gives you a broader finance recruiting network and stronger name recognition in major markets, while UC Santa Barbara can still get you there but usually requires more self-directed hustling to break into the same pipelines. For finance specifically, UCLA tends to have more established student organizations tied to investment banking, consulting, and markets, and easier access to in-term internships because of its location. UCSB has a solid economics pipeline and motivated students do place well, but the path is less built-in.
If your goal is traditional high-finance recruiting, especially investment banking, buy-side roles later on, or competitive corporate finance tracks, UCLA has the clearer edge. Its alumni base in finance is larger, employers are more likely to recruit there intentionally, and being in LA matters for networking, coffee chats, and part-time opportunities during the school year. That combination makes a real difference because finance recruiting often rewards early exposure and fast access to people already in the industry.
At UCSB, students can absolutely land strong finance outcomes, especially through economics, accounting-related preparation, and targeted networking. But compared with UCLA, you may need to work harder to find the same volume of finance-specific clubs, alumni touchpoints, and on-campus employer attention. UCSB is often a very strong experience overall, yet for finance it is more of a build-your-own-road setup than a school where the road is already heavily paved.
For recruiting, internships, and network, UCLA is the better bet. UCSB is still a good option if you strongly prefer the campus culture and are confident you will be proactive from day one, but if finance is the priority driving the decision, UCLA gives you the stronger platform.
