Is USC or UT Austin better for marketing majors?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing USC and UT Austin come up for business, especially marketing. I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally better for someone who wants to study marketing and build career opportunities in that field.
I’m mainly looking at the strength of the marketing program and how well it can help with internships and jobs after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: USC gives you a more nationally connected private-school network with especially strong access to Los Angeles brand, media, and entertainment marketing, while UT Austin gives you a highly respected business education in a major corporate city at a lower cost for many students.
If your goal is internships tied to entertainment, fashion, lifestyle brands, influencer/media strategy, or agencies in LA, USC has a real advantage. Its location and alumni network matter a lot in fields where networking, internships during the school year, and industry proximity can shape early opportunities. USC also tends to feel more intentionally connected to industries where branding and storytelling are central.
UT Austin is far from a weak option for marketing. McCombs carries serious weight with employers, Austin has a strong startup and tech scene, and students can access internships with major companies, agencies, and growing consumer brands. If you are interested in digital marketing, analytics, brand management, or marketing within tech and business-heavy environments, UT Austin can be an excellent setup.
One important distinction is cost. For many students, especially in-state applicants, UT Austin can offer much better value, and that matters if the career path may involve entry-level salaries that are solid but not always huge right away. USC can absolutely open doors, but the price difference is worth taking very seriously unless financial aid changes the picture.
Between the two, USC has a slight edge if you are asking only which school feels stronger and more strategically positioned for marketing itself. But if UT Austin is significantly more affordable, it is very easy to argue that McCombs is the smarter overall choice because the career outcomes can still be excellent.
