Is Brown or Dartmouth more fun for undergraduates?

For sheer undergraduate-centered social life, Dartmouth usually has the more visibly active and tradition-heavy weekend scene. Its smaller size, rural location, and strong focus on undergraduates mean a lot of campus life happens in the same place, with students leaning into school traditions, outdoor trips, and house-based social events. Brown can absolutely be fun too, but the vibe is looser, more self-directed, and tied to both campus and the city around it.

Dartmouth tends to suit students who want a tight-knit campus where people know the rituals, show up for the same events, and treat the college as the center of their social world. The outdoors are a big part of that experience, from hiking and skiing to trips organized through the Outing Club, and weekends often feel communal because there are fewer off-campus distractions. Providence gives you restaurants, music, internships, and city events beyond the gates, and Brown’s open curriculum attracts a student body that is often creative, independent, and less interested in a single dominant social culture. The result is that fun at Brown can feel more varied, but also less automatic. You usually have to shape your own scene a bit more.

If by fun you mean spirited traditions, a concentrated campus social life, and weekends that feel very college-centric, Dartmouth has the edge. If you mean freedom, eclectic people, and having both a campus community and a real city to explore, Brown can be more enjoyable.
