Is Wake Forest or UNC better for communications?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UNC offers a larger, more established media and communications ecosystem, with more student organizations, campus media, alumni reach, and proximity to a broad public flagship network. Wake Forest gives you smaller classes, closer faculty interaction, and often a more individualized undergraduate experience, but with a narrower overall communications footprint.

For communications specifically, UNC usually has the edge in breadth of opportunities. Its size supports more ways to get hands-on experience through student media, interdisciplinary coursework, and a bigger alumni base in journalism, public relations, marketing, digital media, and related fields. For a student who wants lots of options and a busier pipeline into internships, UNC tends to be the more robust environment.

Wake Forest is still a strong choice, especially if you learn best in smaller settings and want professors to know you well. That can matter for mentoring, recommendation letters, and getting involved early. In communications, though, Wake is more likely to feel selective and personalized than expansive.

Career preparation can work well at either school, but the path looks a little different. At UNC, the volume of campus activity and employer connections can make it easier to build clips, leadership roles, and professional contacts quickly. At Wake, students often benefit from closer advising and a tighter community, which can be excellent if you are proactive about seeking internships and shaping a focused niche.

If the question is simply which school is better for communications in the broadest sense, I would lean UNC. It usually offers more program depth, more adjacent opportunities, and a stronger overall platform for internships and early career exploration in communications-related fields.
