Which school has a better social life: Wake Forest or Colgate?

The biggest practical tradeoff is size and setting: Wake Forest gives you a somewhat larger student social world with easier access to off-campus options in Winston-Salem, while Colgate’s smaller, more remote setting makes campus life feel tighter, more all-in, and more dependent on the student community itself. At Wake, a lot of social life runs through Greek organizations, campus events, and nearby restaurants or outings, so there are usually multiple ways to spend a weekend. At Colgate, because Hamilton is small and isolated, students tend to stay on or near campus, which can create a strong shared social culture but also a more enclosed feeling.

Day to day, Wake often feels more varied and flexible for the average student. You can find active campus traditions, school spirit around sports, and a social scene that does not rely entirely on one kind of event. That said, Greek life is quite visible there, so even students who are not involved in it will still feel its influence.

Colgate is known for a very close residential community, and that can make it easy to know people across class years and social groups. A lot of students like that the campus feels lively because so many people are physically there on weekends. The downside is that the smaller scale and rural location can make the scene feel repetitive at times, especially if you want more variety beyond campus-hosted events, house gatherings, or the same set of people.

For “active, welcoming, and fun for an average student,” Wake Forest probably has the edge because it offers more social range and a little more breathing room. Colgate can be excellent socially if you want an intimate, campus-centered experience where everyone leans into the same community, but Wake is more likely to feel balanced and broadly appealing across different personalities.
