UC Davis vs Cal for animal science: which is better for an undergraduate interested in animal science?

UC Davis is the better choice for an undergraduate focused on animal science. Davis has a dedicated Animal Science major, extensive teaching and research facilities tied directly to livestock, equine, dairy, and companion animal work, and one of the country’s best-known veterinary ecosystems on the same campus. Berkeley is excellent overall, but it does not offer the same depth of undergraduate animal science infrastructure.

The biggest difference is the academic setup. At UC Davis, animal science is a built-out undergraduate pathway with specialized coursework in nutrition, physiology, reproduction, behavior, and management, plus access to campus animal units and hands-on labs. That matters because if you already know you want animals to be central to your studies, Davis lets you start doing that in a structured way instead of piecing together related biology or agriculture-adjacent classes.

The second differentiator is day-to-day exposure to the field. UC Davis benefits from its College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and its close connection to the vet school, which creates more obvious opportunities for undergrads to get involved in animal-focused research, pre-vet experiences, and internships tied to farms, clinics, and labs. Berkeley has strong biology and research, but its strengths are broader and more theoretical, not centered on animal agriculture or animal management at the undergraduate level.

The third is career alignment. For students thinking about pre-vet, animal production, equine work, dairy, welfare, nutrition, or animal biotechnology, Davis has a much clearer pipeline because the faculty, facilities, and student organizations are built around those interests. Berkeley’s name carries weight, but for this specific academic interest, Davis gives you more direct training and more relevant opportunities earlier in college.
