You can leave campus and be in very different neighborhoods fast, and there is almost endless access to museums, internships, restaurants, parks, and late-night options. The neighborhood around Columbia has a real identity, but it is also part of a much larger city rhythm, so student life blends into regular New York life more than it does at many colleges.

UT Austin has a strong city atmosphere too, just with a different texture. Austin is lively, creative, and very college-friendly, especially near campus, West Campus, Guadalupe Street, and downtown. If you want a city that still has plenty happening but feels more navigable, social, and centered around student life, UT Austin can be more enjoyable to actually live in.
