Both can lead to strong internships and jobs, but the day-to-day academic setup is meaningfully different.

UT Austin has real momentum in data science at the undergraduate level. Its program is built to connect statistics, computing, and applied work in a way that is easy for employers to recognize, and being in Austin helps with access to tech recruiting, startups, and internships during the school year. The university also has a broad alumni network in Texas tech, consulting, and business analytics roles, which matters for undergrads looking for early experience.

UC San Diego is excellent in computing, math, and research-heavy quantitative fields, and its location puts it in reach of a strong Southern California tech and biotech ecosystem. For students who may want to lean more toward machine learning, computer science, applied math, or research, UCSD can be especially appealing. It is a school with serious technical depth, but for pure undergraduate data science branding and curricular clarity, UT often feels more straightforward.

If the question is which school is more often seen as the stronger undergraduate option specifically for data science, I would lean UT Austin. UC San Diego is absolutely a top-tier choice, but UT currently has the cleaner undergrad data science identity and a very favorable setup for turning that degree into internships and early career opportunities.
