Which is better for undergraduate research opportunities: MIT or Tufts?
I’m trying to decide between MIT and Tufts, and one thing that matters a lot to me is getting involved in research as an undergrad.
I know both schools are strong, but I want to understand which one generally gives students more access to research, especially early on and outside of just the most competitive labs.

The biggest tradeoff is scale and intensity versus accessibility and mentoring style. MIT has a much larger, more research-saturated ecosystem, while Tufts can feel more personal and sometimes easier to navigate because there are fewer layers and often closer faculty contact.
For sheer volume of undergraduate research opportunities, MIT has the edge. Its UROP program is unusually central to the undergraduate experience, and students often get involved early. Research is built into the culture across science, engineering, economics, social sciences, and interdisciplinary areas, so there are simply more openings and more ongoing projects.
That said, MIT is also more intense and can be more competitive in the most sought-after labs. Access is still real outside the marquee groups, but students usually need to be proactive, organized, and comfortable reaching out widely. Tufts offers meaningful undergraduate research too, and one advantage is that undergrads may stand out more quickly in smaller departments or labs. Faculty mentoring can feel more direct, and in some fields it may be easier to build a close working relationship earlier. But the total research enterprise is smaller, so there are fewer labs overall and less of the constant, campus-wide research momentum that MIT has.
If research is one of your top priorities and you want the broadest set of options, the strongest institutional support, and the highest likelihood of finding multiple paths into serious projects, MIT is the better place. Tufts is appealing if you want research in a somewhat less intense environment with potentially closer faculty access, but it does not match MIT’s depth or breadth for undergraduate research.
