Is UMass Amherst or Temple a more fun college experience for undergraduates?

For most undergrads looking for a classic, high-energy college experience, UMass Amherst is more often seen as the more fun campus. It has a true college-town feel in Amherst, a large residential student body, major school spirit around athletics, and a social scene that is built around campus because so many students live there. Temple can absolutely be exciting, but the experience is more urban, more spread out, and often less centered on one shared campus culture.

UMass Amherst tends to appeal to students who want weekends that feel distinctly collegiate: packed dining halls, lots of students around at night, campus events, clubs, rec sports, and a strong sense that the university is the social hub of the area. Because Amherst is not a major city, students often make their own fun through campus traditions, nearby colleges in the Five College Consortium, apartment and dorm social life, and school-sponsored events. That usually creates a more immersive undergraduate atmosphere.

Temple is a better match for someone who thinks “fun” means access to Philadelphia. You get concerts, restaurants, pro sports, internships, neighborhoods to explore, and far more off-campus variety than UMass offers. But Temple’s social energy is less likely to feel concentrated in one place. More students commute or live with different routines, and the city can make campus life feel less unified even when there is plenty to do.

If what you want is students who seem excited to be at the school itself, UMass usually has the edge. If what excites you is living in a city and building your own version of college around that, Temple may feel more alive to you.
