NC State vs Maryland for city life: which one feels more urban as a college experience?

Maryland will feel more urban in day-to-day student life. NC State has plenty going on around it, but the experience is more spread out and feels more like a large university in a city-region than a campus embedded in an urban environment.

Maryland fits the student who wants the city to be part of the routine, not just an occasional outing. Even though College Park itself is more college-town/suburban than fully urban, D.C. is close enough that it often shapes student life in a real way.

NC State fits someone who wants access to a city without the campus itself feeling especially urban. Raleigh is a real and growing city, and there are restaurants, internships, events, and downtown options nearby, but students usually experience it through buses, cars, and planned trips rather than feeling like the city starts the moment they leave campus. The Triangle setup also matters: Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill together offer a lot, but it is less concentrated and less immediately city-like than the Maryland-to-D.C. connection.

If your picture of college includes being able to plug into a major city pretty naturally, Maryland is the clearer match. If you want a campus-centered experience with city access in the background, NC State is more likely to feel comfortable.
