Is NC State or University of Maryland better for finance careers?
I’m trying to choose between NC State and the University of Maryland, and I want to end up in finance after college. I know both schools are solid overall, but I’m mainly wondering which one tends to give students a better path into finance jobs and internships.
I’m looking at the schools from the perspective of career outcomes, not just overall rankings.

The biggest practical tradeoff is market access versus cost and campus vibe: Maryland puts you closer to a denser East Coast finance recruiting network, while NC State can be a very good value and has strong career support but is less known as a finance pipeline. For finance specifically, Maryland’s Smith School has a stronger national reputation in business, more established finance recruiting, and easier geographic access to DC, Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia. NC State is respected, especially in North Carolina, but its clearest employer strength is broader than finance and leans more heavily toward regional outcomes.
If your goal is traditional finance recruiting, especially internships that can lead to banking, asset management, corporate finance leadership programs, or more structured employer pipelines, Maryland has the edge. The Smith School is a real advantage here because recruiters often know it well, and proximity matters more in finance than students sometimes expect. Being closer to major firms makes it easier to attend events, network with alumni, and take advantage of semester-time opportunities.
NC State can still work well for finance, particularly for corporate finance, banking in the Southeast, or roles where analytical and quantitative skills matter. Raleigh is a strong and growing job market, and NC State students can absolutely land good outcomes, but you may need to be more proactive about networking beyond campus for the most competitive finance tracks. That difference matters if you want a path that feels a bit more built out from the start.
From a career-outcomes perspective alone, I’d lean Maryland for finance. I’d only pick NC State over Maryland if the cost difference is significant enough to reduce debt in a meaningful way, or if you already know you want to build your career mainly in North Carolina. For pure finance positioning, Maryland is the cleaner bet.
