Is UCLA or Tulane better for social life as an undergraduate?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and structure: UCLA offers a huge, varied social scene where you can find almost any crowd, while Tulane’s social life is smaller, more centralized, and often feels easier to plug into quickly. At UCLA, the student body is much larger, campus life is spread across many subcommunities, and Los Angeles becomes part of the social experience. At Tulane, the social scene is more concentrated around campus traditions, residential life, and New Orleans itself, so the culture can feel more immediately cohesive and outgoing.

For ease of meeting people, Tulane often feels more accessible at the start. It has a reputation for a friendly, socially active undergraduate culture, and because the school is smaller, people tend to run into each other more often and share more of the same events. New Orleans also shapes the vibe in a real way, with a festive, extroverted energy that spills into student life.

UCLA is very social too, but it can take more initiative to build your circle because the campus is so large. The upside is range: there are tons of clubs, student organizations, events, apartment gatherings, athletics, and Westwood or LA-based things to do. The culture is not socially closed off, but it can feel less automatically tight-knit than Tulane because students are distributed across so many scenes.

In terms of outgoing versus chill, Tulane leans more overtly social and spirited day to day. UCLA has plenty of outgoing people, but the overall atmosphere is more mixed: ambitious, active, sometimes laid-back, sometimes pre-professional, depending on the group. That makes UCLA great for students who want options, but Tulane often feels more socially immediate.

If social ease and a built-in undergraduate scene are your top priority, Tulane has the edge. If you want a bigger universe of people and social possibilities, and you are comfortable taking more initiative to find your place, UCLA can be incredibly rewarding.
