Miami vs Syracuse for communications: which school is stronger for a communications major?

I’m trying to compare Miami and Syracuse as possible colleges for communications, and I’m having a hard time figuring out which one is better overall for that major.

I want to understand which school has the stronger communications program and which one might give me better opportunities in the field after graduation.

For communications, Syracuse has the stronger reputation and deeper industry pipeline. Its Newhouse School is one of the most established names in communications, journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcast, and media, and that reputation tends to carry real weight with internships, alumni connections, and employers. If your main goal is to study communications in a program that is especially known for that field, Syracuse is the clearer standout.

Syracuse makes the most sense for a student who wants a professionally focused communications experience from the start. Newhouse is built around media and communications training, so students often benefit from specialized coursework, student media, hands-on production opportunities, and a very large alumni network in communication-related industries. For someone interested in broadcasting, sports media, journalism, PR, or advertising, Syracuse usually offers more direct momentum.

Miami fits a different kind of student. The University of Miami can be a strong option if you want communications within a broader university experience that also brings access to entertainment, business, health, and Latin American or international connections through its location. It may appeal more to someone who wants flexibility across fields, likes the idea of studying communications in a warm-weather campus environment, or sees themself combining media interests with other industries rather than aiming straight at a traditional communications-school path.

In terms of post-grad opportunities, Syracuse tends to have the edge specifically within communications because the Newhouse name is so well known and the alumni network is unusually strong in media-related fields. Miami can still open doors, especially in certain regional markets and cross-industry settings, but for communications alone, Syracuse is the school most students would view as having the stronger program and more established launchpad.
