UC Berkeley vs. Swarthmore for computer science: which is better for an undergraduate CS student?

UC Berkeley is the better choice for most undergraduates focused specifically on computer science. Its CS program is one of the most established and visible in the country, the course catalog is far deeper, and the surrounding Bay Area location creates unusually direct access to internships, research, and tech employers. For a student who wants maximum breadth in CS and the strongest built-in industry ecosystem, Berkeley has a clear edge.

The biggest difference is academic scale within computer science itself. Berkeley offers far more upper-level CS coursework and specialization areas, including systems, AI, machine learning, theory, security, graphics, and human-computer interaction, plus a very large research footprint. Swarthmore’s CS department is respected and intellectually serious, but it is much smaller, so the number of advanced electives, labs, and faculty subfields is naturally more limited.

The second differentiator is career access. Berkeley benefits from being deeply tied to major tech recruiting pipelines, startup culture, and nearby companies, which matters a lot for internships during the school year as well as summer opportunities. Swarthmore students can absolutely place well into tech and graduate programs, but Berkeley’s employer visibility in CS is simply on another level, and that tends to translate into more volume and variety of opportunities.

The main reason to prefer Swarthmore is that it offers a very different undergraduate experience. You would get smaller classes, closer faculty interaction, and a liberal arts setting where teaching and mentoring are especially central. That can be a real advantage if you learn best through discussion-heavy classes and want a tightly knit campus, but for pure CS depth, research scale, and tech-world momentum, Berkeley stands out.
