UC Berkeley vs ETH Zurich for computer science: which is generally better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UC Berkeley gives you a top-tier computer science education inside a broad American university with huge industry access, while ETH Zurich offers an equally elite technical education in a more specialized European setting with a different academic structure and job market. In pure CS reputation, both are world-class and taken very seriously. Berkeley tends to be more visible in the U.S. tech ecosystem and startup world, while ETH has an exceptional global academic and research reputation, especially across Europe.

Berkeley is one of the most recognized names in computer science anywhere, and its location near Silicon Valley matters in a real way. The school has deep connections to major tech companies, strong recruiting pipelines, and a culture that mixes theory, systems, AI, entrepreneurship, and research at a very high level. When people talk about the most influential CS departments in the U.S., Berkeley is almost always in that small top group.

ETH Zurich is also absolutely elite, especially in math-heavy, technical, and research-oriented fields. It is one of Europe’s flagship science and engineering universities, and in academic circles its name carries enormous weight. Compared with Berkeley, ETH can feel more focused, structured, and technical, with less of the broad liberal-arts environment and less of the U.S.-style startup energy around campus.

So in broad reputation, this is not a case where one school clearly overwhelms the other. For global academic strength in CS, they are peers. My plain answer is that Berkeley is more often seen as the stronger all-around name for computer science, mostly because of its influence in U.S. tech and the sheer breadth of its CS ecosystem. ETH Zurich is not a step down in intellectual quality at all. It is better understood as a different kind of top institution rather than a lesser one.
