Which school is better for Washington, DC internships: Cornell or Georgetown?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus reach: Georgetown puts you in Washington during the school year, while Cornell gives you a powerful alumni network but makes most DC internships a summer or semester-away plan. For realistic in-semester access, Georgetown has the clear edge because students can intern part time during fall or spring without leaving campus life. Its location, alumni presence in government, policy, NGOs, media, and international affairs, and the school’s long-standing ties to DC employers make opportunities easier to find and easier to sustain.

At Georgetown, it is normal for undergrads to build internships into the academic year, especially in fields like politics, public policy, international relations, communications, public interest work, and law-adjacent roles. Being in the city also matters for networking, informational interviews, events on the Hill, think tank panels, and last-minute opportunities that often go to students who are already nearby.

Cornell absolutely places students into strong DC internships, and the name carries weight.
