Does UC Berkeley actually have a small campus feel compared with Swarthmore?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale: Berkeley offers many small communities inside a very large university, while Swarthmore is built from the ground up to feel intimate almost all the time. At Berkeley, you can find close-knit spaces through your major, residence hall, research group, student orgs, and themed programs, but the overall campus environment still feels busy, public, and high-volume. Swarthmore’s size makes day-to-day life more consistently personal, with smaller classes earlier on and a campus culture where it is harder to feel anonymous.

So yes, UC Berkeley can feel more intimate than its reputation suggests, but not in the same way as Swarthmore. Berkeley often feels small once you are anchored in a department or community, especially in upper-division classes, lab groups, or selective programs. The difference is that those smaller circles exist within a much larger institution, so your experience depends more on how actively you plug in.

Swarthmore tends to make connection easier by default. Faculty access is a major part of the culture, and the residential campus is quieter and more self-contained. At Berkeley, there are excellent mentoring and community-building opportunities, but the university does not automatically create the same all-encompassing small-campus atmosphere.

If your main goal is to avoid feeling lost, Swarthmore is more likely to deliver that from day one. Berkeley can absolutely become personal and connected, but it usually takes more initiative and comfort navigating a bigger, faster-moving environment.
