How should I choose between UC Davis and UC Irvine for college if I like both schools?

The biggest practical tradeoff is environment: UC Davis gives you a classic college-town experience with a huge, relaxed campus and a more self-contained student life, while UC Irvine places you in a quieter suburban setting in Orange County with easier access to internships, beaches, and the broader LA area. Davis tends to feel more traditional and communal because so much of student life revolves around the campus and town itself. Irvine often feels more spread out socially, with many students balancing campus life with off-campus opportunities.

That difference matters a lot day to day. At Davis, the bike-friendly campus, walkable downtown, and strong school-spirit atmosphere can make it easier to feel immersed in college life. At Irvine, the campus is very well kept and organized, but the social scene can feel more low-key and independent, especially compared with a true college town.

Academically, both are strong public universities, so the better choice often comes down to your intended major and how you want to spend your four years. UC Davis is especially well known for agriculture, environmental fields, animal science, biological sciences, and programs connected to sustainability and research. UC Irvine stands out in areas like computer science, engineering, business-related paths, and health-adjacent fields, and its Southern California location can help with internships during the school year.

I would also weigh comfort with the surrounding area. Davis is smaller, calmer, and more centered on students. Irvine is cleaner, newer-feeling, and close to a lot, but it can also feel less lively as a college town and more car-oriented once you leave campus.

If you truly like both and the cost is similar, I’d lean toward UC Davis for a more cohesive undergraduate experience unless UC Irvine is noticeably better for your major or career goals. Irvine makes more sense when location-driven opportunities are a real priority, not just a nice bonus.
