Is Boston College or the University of Wisconsin better for accounting?

For accounting, the University of Wisconsin is the stronger pick. Wisconsin’s business school has a deeper national presence in accounting, a larger recruiting footprint, and especially strong pipelines into public accounting firms and major Midwest employers. If your main question is which school gives you the more established accounting platform, Wisconsin has the clearer edge.

One important difference is the structure and visibility of the accounting program itself. Wisconsin’s School of Business is known for sending a high volume of students into accounting, and that scale matters because it usually means more course options, more classmates headed into the field, and more employers showing up specifically to hire accounting majors. Boston College is well respected overall, but it is not as distinctly identified as an accounting destination in the same way.

Recruiting is another major separator. At Wisconsin, accounting recruiting is especially robust for Big Four and other large firms, with strong placement in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and other major markets. Boston College can absolutely place students into strong jobs, especially in Boston and the Northeast, but the accounting network is not usually the main reason students choose BC the way it often is at Wisconsin.

Cost can matter in accounting more than students expect, especially if both schools lead to similar first jobs. If Wisconsin is significantly cheaper for you, that strengthens its case even more, since accounting salaries right after graduation are solid but not usually so high that paying a large premium makes obvious sense.

The one reason to lean Boston College would be if you strongly prefer living and recruiting in Boston, or if BC’s campus environment and network fit you much better personally.
