Is the University of Maine or Fordham better for finance?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges for finance, and these two keep coming up on my list for very different reasons. I know one is a much larger public school and the other is more urban and business-focused, but I’m not sure which would be the stronger choice for someone who wants to study finance and possibly work in that field after graduation.

For finance, Fordham is usually the more direct path into the field. Its business school is a major draw, its New York City location matters a lot for internships during the school year, and finance recruiting is simply more built into the student experience there than it is at the University of Maine.

Fordham fits the student who wants business to feel central from the start. If you like the idea of being around classmates who are actively chasing internships, networking in the city, and aiming at finance, accounting, consulting, or related paths, Fordham gives you that ecosystem. Being in NYC is not just a lifestyle perk. It can make informational interviews, part-time internships, alumni events, and employer access much easier while you are still in school.

Maine fits a different kind of student. If you want a bigger public campus, a broader state-school feel, and potentially lower costs, it may be more appealing. You would likely need to be more self-directed about building finance experience through summer internships, student organizations, and networking, because the pipeline is less automatic.

A lot comes down to the kind of finance career you are imagining. For students interested in corporate finance, banking, investment roles, or other business-heavy paths where location and recruiting density matter, Fordham has a clearer advantage.

If both are affordable, Fordham is the one I would lean toward for finance specifically. If Fordham would require significantly more debt, that changes the calculation fast, because finance is a field where outcomes depend heavily on what you do in college, not just the school name.
