Northwestern or University of San Francisco for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between Northwestern and the University of San Francisco and I’m interested in a finance career after college.

I know both schools can lead to good opportunities, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger overall path into finance through recruiting, alumni network, and internship access.

Northwestern is the clearer choice for finance careers. It has a much stronger national recruiting presence and broader brand recognition with employers across investment banking, private equity, asset management, and corporate finance. For a student who wants the strongest overall launch into finance, Northwestern opens more doors and does so in more markets.

The biggest differentiator is recruiting reach. Northwestern is a consistent target or near-target for major finance employers, especially in Chicago and New York, and students benefit from structured on-campus recruiting for internships and full-time roles. University of San Francisco can connect students to Bay Area opportunities, but it does not have the same volume of employer attention or the same level of direct access to elite finance pipelines.

The alumni network is another major gap. Northwestern has a very large, influential alumni community spread across top banks, buy-side firms, consulting firms, and Fortune 500 finance teams. That matters because finance hiring often runs through networking, referrals, and older alumni who know how to pull students into interview processes. USF’s network is respectable in the Bay Area, but it is more regional and not nearly as powerful in traditional finance recruiting circles.

Internship access also favors Northwestern, even though USF’s San Francisco location is useful. Being in San Francisco helps with local internships during the school year, especially in corporate finance, fintech, and smaller firms. But location alone does not outweigh Northwestern’s stronger employer pipeline.

If your interest is specifically traditional high-finance paths, Northwestern gives you the better platform. USF becomes more compelling only if cost is dramatically lower and you are comfortable building a more self-directed path, especially in Bay Area finance-related roles rather than the broadest national finance market.
