UW’s research strength is enormous, and being tied to a major public research university with strong health sciences and tech connections creates serious opportunities over time. For a student interested in fields connected to Seattle’s biotech, medicine, public health, or computing ecosystem, UW can be especially compelling, but you may need to do more of the legwork yourself to find the right opening.

For freshmen and sophomores, UCLA may feel more accessible at the beginning simply because the undergraduate research culture is highly visible and centralized. At UW, students absolutely do get involved early, but the process can depend more on timing, department culture, and individual outreach. If your main question is which campus makes early research involvement a little easier to access and organize, UCLA has the edge; if you are already drawn to UW’s specific research areas and are comfortable being very self-directed, UW can be just as rewarding.
