Is Ohio State or UCLA better value for college if I’m comparing cost and overall experience?

For most students, Ohio State is the better value on cost alone, while UCLA often delivers the stronger overall experience and brand reach if the price difference is manageable. UCLA, though, brings a highly distinctive location in Los Angeles, broad national and international recognition, and especially strong access to West Coast internships in media, tech, health, and research.

The biggest differentiator is net price. If you are not a California resident, UCLA can become a much more expensive choice, and that gap matters a lot when judging value because debt can erase some of the upside of a more prestigious name.

Another practical difference is day-to-day opportunity. UCLA’s setting gives you direct access to internships and professional networking during the school year in a way few campuses can match, especially in entertainment, startups, healthcare, and public interest work around LA. Ohio State also has strong opportunities, particularly through Columbus, which has a growing economy and solid links in business, government, logistics, and engineering, but the surrounding ecosystem is usually not viewed as quite as extensive or distinctive as UCLA’s.

The student experience also feels different. UCLA has the appeal of Southern California weather, a residential college atmosphere within a major city, and a campus culture that many students find especially energizing. Ohio State offers one of the biggest and most spirited college communities in the country, with school pride, athletics, and campus life that can feel more traditionally collegiate and often more accessible socially.

For pure value, I would lean Ohio State unless UCLA is close in price after aid or your goals line up directly with what Los Angeles and UCLA uniquely offer.
