Is Ohio State or the University of Illinois worth it for an out-of-state student?

For most out-of-state students, the University of Illinois is easier to justify only if you are targeting one of its especially high-demand academic areas, while Ohio State is usually the more defensible value as a broad, all-around option. Illinois stands out most in fields like engineering, computer science, and some technical majors, where its national reputation and employer pull can be a real difference-maker. Ohio State, meanwhile, offers a very wide range of strong programs, a huge alumni network, and a campus experience that tends to feel more balanced relative to the price.

Academically, Illinois has sharper peaks. If you already know you want a major where UIUC is particularly known, the out-of-state cost can make sense because those programs have strong recruiting pipelines and serious academic depth. Outside of those standout areas, though, the premium can be harder to justify when many departments are solid but not uniquely worth paying much more for.

Ohio State’s main advantage is that it delivers scale and opportunity across many disciplines without depending as much on one or two elite niches. Its size brings extensive research, internships, student organizations, and alumni connections in business, health-related fields, public affairs, sciences, and more. That matters for general value, especially if you are still exploring majors or want flexibility to change direction.

Campus life is another real separator. Ohio State has a classic large-campus energy in Columbus, with major school spirit, Big Ten culture, and access to a large city that supports internships and student life well. Illinois absolutely has a strong campus community too, but Champaign-Urbana is more self-contained, so some students find it less dynamic unless they are very campus-centered.

For future opportunities, both can open doors, but the return on investment depends on how specifically you would use the school’s strengths. Illinois can pay off very well in the right major. Ohio State makes more sense when you want a strong public flagship experience, broad name recognition, and lots of options without needing one highly specialized reason to pay out-of-state tuition.
