Is Arizona State or UChicago better for economics majors?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and intensity: UChicago offers a smaller, more theory-heavy economics environment with unusually deep faculty strength, while Arizona State offers a larger public-university setting with more flexibility and a broader access-oriented experience. For pure academic reputation in economics, UChicago is on a different level. Its economics department has long been one of the most influential in the field, and the school is especially known for rigorous training in price theory, quantitative analysis, and research-driven economics.

That reputation is not just a vague prestige effect. UChicago economics is one of the defining departments in modern economic thought, and its faculty and alumni have had outsized influence on academic economics, public policy, and finance. If someone says they want the strongest academic brand in economics between these two schools, the answer is UChicago.

Arizona State is still a legitimate option, especially if you want a large university with many opportunities, strong honors programs, and potentially more room to combine economics with business, policy, data, or public service interests. It can absolutely work well for undergraduates who are proactive. But its economics program does not carry the same elite academic reputation or disciplinary influence as UChicago’s.

Another difference is the style of the major. UChicago economics tends to be more mathematically and analytically demanding, and that matters if you are interested in graduate study, high-level policy work, or a very rigorous intellectual environment. ASU’s program is more likely to feel accessible and flexible within a big university structure, which can be a real advantage for some students, but that is different from being viewed as stronger in the field.

So if the question is which school is more highly regarded for economics as an academic program, it is UChicago by a wide margin. ASU can still be a smart choice for cost, fit, or flexibility, but on economics reputation alone, UChicago is the clear standout.
