Which is more prestigious for college admissions and resumes, Arizona State University or Harvard University?

The biggest practical tradeoff here is broad name recognition versus strong-but-more field-specific reputation. Harvard carries elite, immediate prestige almost everywhere: graduate admissions, national employers, international recognition, and networking circles. Arizona State is well regarded in many areas and has real strengths in fields like business, engineering, journalism, and innovation, but its reputation is not viewed at the same level across the board.

On college and graduate school applications, Harvard’s name usually signals extremely high selectivity and academic prestige right away. That can matter for first impressions, especially in competitive fields like law, finance, consulting, academia, and certain fellowships. ASU is respected, especially for students who take advantage of honors, research, internships, and strong departmental programs, but it does not carry the same automatic status signal.
