Arizona State vs Notre Dame for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Arizona State and Notre Dame for a future career in finance. I know both schools can lead to business jobs, but I’m trying to understand which one generally gives students a stronger path into finance recruiting and networking.

I’m mainly interested in the overall advantage for getting internships and early career opportunities after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is reach versus cost and scale: Notre Dame tends to offer a much stronger national pipeline into competitive finance recruiting, while Arizona State gives you a larger public-university network and often a more affordable path, especially if you have in-state tuition or major merit aid. For internships and first jobs in finance, Notre Dame usually has the clearer advantage because its alumni base is unusually engaged and the school has stronger visibility with firms that recruit for investment banking, corporate finance, consulting-adjacent finance roles, and buy-side paths. ASU can absolutely lead to good outcomes, especially in the Southwest and in corporate roles, but it is less likely to deliver the same level of built-in access at the highest tiers of recruiting.

Notre Dame’s business school has a very loyal alumni culture, and that matters a lot in finance where warm outreach, referrals, and school-specific pipelines can shape who gets interviews. The brand also travels well across major finance markets, including Chicago, New York, and other large cities. In practice, students at Notre Dame often benefit from a tighter campus recruiting ecosystem and a more concentrated alumni willingness to respond, mentor, and advocate.

Arizona State’s strengths are different. W. P. Carey is well regarded, the university is huge, and there are many students entering business fields, which can create a broad network across industries. ASU is especially useful if you want flexibility, a large student body, and access to employers in Arizona and the broader Sun Belt. But for highly structured finance recruiting, the scale can also mean more competition internally and less of the close-knit alumni pull that schools like Notre Dame are known for.
