Yes. For an equally strong unhooked applicant, Stanford is usually the tougher admit and often feels more unpredictable, while Columbia can be somewhat more legible in what it values.

One big difference is institutional style. Stanford tends to look for a very distinctive personal profile, often with unusual initiative, original projects, or a clear sense of intellectual and extracurricular impact beyond just top grades and scores. That can make outcomes feel less linear, because many academically outstanding students still do not match the particular shape of applicant Stanford seems drawn to.
