University of San Diego vs UC Irvine for business: which is the better choice?

For business, UC Irvine is usually the stronger academic and recruiting option, especially if you want a larger public university with broader employer access, more quantitative coursework, and the resources of a major research campus. Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business has a solid reputation, benefits from Orange County and Southern California recruiting, and sits near a dense market for internships in finance, consulting, accounting, healthcare, real estate, and tech-adjacent business roles. USD can still be a very good choice, but it tends to appeal more to students who want smaller classes, a more personal campus environment, and a private-school feel.

UC Irvine makes the most sense for the student who wants scale and career breadth. You’ll likely find more course variety, more student organizations tied to business fields, and a wider alumni footprint across California. Being in Irvine also helps for internship access during the school year, since there are many nearby companies rather than having to rely as heavily on summer-only opportunities. If you are self-directed and comfortable navigating a bigger campus, Irvine often gives you more to work with.

USD fits the student who values close faculty interaction, a smaller undergraduate community, and a campus culture that can feel more polished and relationship-driven. In business, that can matter if you learn best through discussion-heavy classes, easier professor access, and a tighter-knit network. San Diego has good internship possibilities too, especially in local business, real estate, entrepreneurship, and smaller firms, but the pipeline is usually not as broad as what UCI can tap into through Orange County and the larger UC ecosystem.

For recruiting, accounting and corporate roles are often more visible at UCI simply because of size, employer volume, and location. USD students can absolutely do well, but there is usually more of a premium on taking initiative and using the smaller network effectively.

If cost is similar, I’d lean UC Irvine for business. I’d lean USD only if you know you want a smaller private-campus experience and you’re confident that environment will help you perform better and build stronger relationships.
