Is UC Davis or NYU worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

UC Davis tends to make the most sense for a student who wants a full campus experience, broad academic strength, and a lower-cost option that still carries real name recognition. For someone planning graduate or professional school, keeping undergraduate debt lower can matter a lot more than paying extra for a private-school brand.

NYU is easier to defend financially for a student who will use the city itself as part of the education. A student who wants internships during the school year, is highly self-directed, and is entering fields like finance, media, entertainment, fashion, or certain arts and business tracks may get more direct value from NYU’s New York location and alumni network. That value is most real when the student is prepared to take advantage of the pace, independence, and networking opportunities built into the NYU experience.

The key question is not whether NYU is a good school, because it is, but whether its extra cost changes your actual outcomes enough to matter. If NYU would leave you with heavy loans, UC Davis is often the smarter investment. If NYU is affordable after aid and aligns closely with the industry you want to enter, then the higher price can be justified because you are paying for access as much as for classes.
