RPI vs Stony Brook for computer science: which is the better choice?
I’m trying to decide between RPI and Stony Brook for computer science and keep seeing different opinions online. I want to compare them based on the overall undergrad CS experience, not just rankings.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost and scale versus a more engineering-centered private-school experience. Stony Brook usually offers the stronger value, especially if you are in-state, while RPI tends to feel more focused and tightly built around engineering and tech. If the prices are anywhere close, I would still lean Stony Brook for CS unless you strongly prefer RPI’s smaller private-school setting and campus culture. If RPI is significantly more expensive, it is hard to justify paying that premium for computer science when Stony Brook already offers excellent preparation for internships, industry, and grad school.
