Is Yale or Barnard better for women in STEM?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Yale gives you a larger university STEM ecosystem with engineering, major research labs, and a full pre-med infrastructure, while Barnard gives you a women-centered college experience inside Columbia’s STEM resources. For a woman who wants daily classroom life shaped by a women’s college, Barnard has a real advantage. For someone who wants the broadest range of STEM departments, especially engineering, Yale is the more complete standalone option.

Barnard can be especially appealing for women in STEM because your home college is entirely focused on women’s education, and you still take many classes through Columbia. That means access to Columbia labs, research, pre-med advising, and engineering opportunities while keeping Barnard’s smaller advising environment.

Yale is also very supportive of women in STEM, but in a different way. It has strong science departments, substantial undergraduate research access, and more built-in breadth across STEM fields, including engineering within Yale itself. If you are deciding among science, math, computer science, engineering, or pre-med and want one campus to cover all of that without relying on a partner institution, Yale is simpler and deeper.

For pre-med specifically, either can work very well. Barnard students benefit from Columbia-affiliated medical and research opportunities in New York, which can be excellent for clinical exposure. Yale also offers strong advising and research, with the advantage of a more self-contained undergraduate experience.

If the question is specifically which is better for women in STEM, Barnard has the edge on gender-centered support and culture, while Yale has the edge on total STEM scale and in-house options.
