Should I choose UCLA or Stanford for a biology major?

For biology, Stanford usually makes more sense for the student who wants a smaller undergraduate environment, easier access to faculty, and a very research-intensive campus where biology connects closely with medicine, engineering, and entrepreneurship. UCLA is an excellent choice for the student who wants a large, energetic public university, a broader range of peers and labs, and strong life-science opportunities tied to a major academic medical center. Both are outstanding in biology, but the day-to-day experience can feel very different.

Stanford tends to suit someone who values close mentorship and flexibility. If you like the idea of building strong relationships with professors early and being in a campus culture that pushes innovation across disciplines, Stanford has a real edge.

UCLA fits the student who thrives in a bigger ecosystem and doesn’t mind being proactive. Its biology and broader life sciences offerings are extensive, there are many labs across campus and through UCLA Health, and Los Angeles gives you access to hospitals, public health settings, and biotech-adjacent experiences. The tradeoff is that opportunities are plentiful but not always handed to you, so you need to be comfortable navigating a large institution and advocating for yourself.

For overall student experience, Stanford is more residential and self-contained, while UCLA feels more urban and high-energy. Stanford often feels more intimate and easier to personalize; UCLA can feel more varied and socially expansive. If your ideal biology experience includes close faculty access, lighter bureaucratic friction, and a campus where undergrad research is especially central, Stanford is hard to pass up. If you want a big-school atmosphere, a huge life-sciences network, and are excited by the scale and pace of UCLA, that path can be incredibly rewarding.
