Is Howard University or the University of Pittsburgh better for pre-med?

The biggest practical tradeoff is community and mission at Howard versus scale and medical infrastructure at Pitt. For pre-med, Pitt usually gives you broader access to a large research university ecosystem, major hospital connections through UPMC, and a wide range of science coursework and labs. Howard, though, offers a distinctive environment for students interested in medicine in underserved communities, strong identity-based support, and direct ties to Howard University Hospital and a historic pipeline into health professions.

If you are judging mainly by research access, clinical opportunities, and the depth of the surrounding medical system, Pitt has an edge. Its connection to a major academic medical network tends to create more volume in research labs, shadowing possibilities, and medically related student experiences. That matters because pre-med students often need to build a strong record over several years, and a large health system can make that easier.

Howard can still be an excellent pre-med choice, especially for students who want a mission-driven campus and a setting where Black students pursuing medicine are especially visible and supported. The university has a long history of producing doctors and serving communities that are often overlooked, and that can shape mentorship, motivation, and the kind of clinical perspective you develop.

On advising and med school application support, the key question is not just whether advising exists, but how accessible and consistent it feels in practice. Pitt tends to be seen as stronger on infrastructure and breadth of opportunity, while Howard can be especially meaningful for students who thrive in a close-knit environment with a clear social mission. Either school can get you to med school, but if the question is which is the stronger all-around pre-med platform for most students, I would give the advantage to the University of Pittsburgh.
